FAQ

Materials and Wood Features

What’s the difference between the various wood species available?

Each type of wood has specific characteristics that influence the appearance, durability, and performance of windows and doors over time:

Fir: a light-colored, lightweight, and easy-to-work wood. It provides excellent thermal insulation and is perfect for those looking for a good quality/price ratio. Ideal for lacquered finishes and environments that are not too exposed.

Larch: features a pronounced grain and warm colors ranging from red to yellow-brown. It is naturally resistant to moisture and weather conditions, making it suitable for exterior windows and doors, even in mountain or humid areas.

Oak: a noble wood, extremely strong and stable. It has an elegant and long-lasting appearance, perfect for those who want high-end windows and doors with minimal maintenance requirements.

The choice depends on style, budget, and environmental conditions. For personalized advice, our team is at your disposal.

What are the main advantages of wood in windows and furnishings?

The greatest advantage? Wood is wood: natural, environmentally friendly, alive, and warm.
Those who choose to build with wood are making a decision backed by hundreds of years of experience and real-world testing; a choice that values the beauty of the material rather than its presumed immutability over time.
Specifically, wooden windows and doors guarantee comfort, durability, aesthetics, and sustainability.

What’s the difference between wood for indoor and outdoor use?

The difference between wood for interior and exterior use lies in its resistance to weather and biological agents.

Wood for interiors: chosen for its aesthetics and ease of workability, it does not need to withstand climate fluctuations or pests. Typical species include ash, beech, walnut, and oak.

Wood for exteriors: must be strong and durable, able to resist humidity, sun, temperature changes, fungi, and insects. Commonly used species include larch, fir, pine, teak, cedar, iroko, and oak. It requires specific protective treatments and coatings to maintain its integrity over time.

What factors influence the durability of wood windows?

We answer concisely: wood, finishes, exposure, and care.
A high-quality wooden window or door, if properly designed, installed, and maintained, can last for decades, easily exceeding 50 years.

Looking more closely, by studying historic wooden constructions and drawing on our 60 years of woodworking experience, we can explain these points in more detail:

  • Choosing high-quality wood

  • Treatments and finishing cycle

  • Exposure to the elements

  • Care and periodic maintenance

Do wooden windows offer good thermal and acoustic insulation?

Wooden windows and doors provide excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, provided they are designed, manufactured, and installed to the highest standards. Their effectiveness depends on a combination of factors that work together to create an efficient barrier against cold, heat, and external noise.

Thermal insulation: Wood is a natural insulator thanks to its cellular structure, which traps air. Efficiency is enhanced with high-performance glazing, airtight seals, and well-designed profiles, ensuring comfort and energy savings.

Acoustic insulation: The density and mass of wood reduce sound transmission. Specific glazing, the window or door structure, and airtight seals further improve the reduction of external noise.

How does wood maintenance work for windows and doors?

Maintaining wooden windows and doors is a simple but essential task to preserve the material’s beauty and performance over time. With minimal and periodic care, our windows and doors can last for decades while retaining their original appearance.

Routine maintenance: regular cleaning of glass and surfaces, removal of dust and water droplets, and occasionally (1–2 times a year) a thorough cleaning with a damp cloth and neutral detergent. It is also possible to apply specific products to nourish and protect the finish.

Extraordinary maintenance: restoration of the original finish after 15–20 years, necessary if the surface becomes rough, dull, or cracked. This requires professional skills and products.

Products and Customizations

Is it possible to request fully custom-made products?

Window and door companies always work to provide tailor-made products. After all, it couldn’t be any other way! Every building has openings of different sizes and shapes, which the window specialist must be able to address by offering windows with opening and closing systems suited to the context.

At ARBOR, thanks to our master craftsmen and in-house production and finishing, we can offer customers a high level of customization.

What is the average lead time for a custom-made product?

It largely depends on the complexity of the project: the number of openings, the type of elements to be built, and the level of customization required.
As a general guideline, for a typical residential order with 10–15 windows or doors to be produced, the delivery time is approximately 2 months from order confirmation and execution surveys.
Delivery times may shorten or extend depending on the specific workload at the time.

For ARBOR, meeting delivery deadlines is important. For this reason, at the order confirmation stage, we agree on a delivery date and provide our clients with visibility on the steps involved in the construction of their windows and doors.

How can glass, steel, or iron railings be paired with a wooden staircase?

Combining different materials for a staircase is a design choice that can completely transform the look of a space, creating a unique blend of warmth, elegance, and modernity.
If you have a wooden staircase, you can pair it with other materials such as glass, steel, or iron, each of which gives the staircase a distinctive character.
The choice of railing depends not only on your personal taste but also on the style of your home and your functional needs.

We will be happy to assist you at every stage of the design process, offering personalized advice to find the best solution that enhances your wooden staircase and elevates the entire space.

Is it possible to integrate motorized systems with wooden shutters?

Absolutely yes. Integrating motorized systems with our wooden shading solutions (such as shutters, blinds, and louvered panels) is not only possible but represents the ideal choice to combine the warmth and elegance of wood with the utmost comfort and convenience offered by modern technology.

Motorization transforms a traditional window or door into a “smart” element, easily manageable and integrable with modern home automation systems.

Comparisons and Advantages

What are the advantages of wooden windows and doors compared to those made of PVC or aluminum?

We respond honestly, clearly, and directly.

The advantages are tied to the fact that wood is wood. It is a warm material to the touch, with distinctive grains, minimal environmental impact, fully recyclable, and always repairable and maintainable.

There is no “good” or “bad” material. If these characteristics are not important to you, and you prefer solid colors, uniform finishes, and (theoretical) maintenance-free materials, then PVC or aluminum are likely better suited to your needs.

Is it possible to benefit from tax deductions for the purchase of wooden windows and doors?

Absolutely yes. Replacing wooden windows and doors is eligible for various tax incentives, allowing you to recover a significant portion of the expense. These incentives do not translate into an immediate discount on the invoice, but rather a reduction in the income tax (IRPEF) you will pay over the following 10 years. The total deduction is divided into 10 equal annual installments.
